HISTORY
The Veterans Memorial was originally installed in 1950 on ground donated for use by the Riverton Methodist Church. At that time it was erected to honor veterans of World War I and World War II.

In 1974, the Clear Lake Township Board conducted a renovation of the Memorial. This renovation included bronze plaques honoring the Township’s Veterans and an addition of an Honor Roll of Veterans serving during the Korean and Vietnam Conflicts. Once completed, the Board held a memorial service and a dedication ceremony on May 30, 1974 to unveil the new monument.

Between 1974 and 2005 minor renovations were done to the landscaping and lighting. During this time span, additional names were added, as well as, those serving during Desert Storm. To honor these Veterans, the names were listed on separate plaques that were then attached to the larger already existing plaques, due to space issues.

Then when the new conflict, Operation Iraqi Freedom, arose there wasn’t enough space to honor those currently serving. In 2006, the current Township Board approved a renovation of the Memorial and the surrounding area. The existing bronze plaques were removed from the stone monuments. They were replaced with sheets of black granite, covering the entire face of each of the existing stone monuments. This created room for additional names of veterans of past, present and future conflicts to be engraved. The Township held a submission period for residents to submit any spelling corrections to the existing veterans listed and additional veterans to be added to past and present conflicts.

Included in this renovation was the addition of two M101A1 Howitzer cannons donated by the Department of the Army. The Illinois Army and Air National Guard demilitarized and painted these cannons for display on two concrete pads added to the Memorial area. Other renovations included the installation of additional sidewalk, new lighting and three new flag poles to fly the American, Illinois and POW flags. A rededication ceremony was held during the annual Remembrance Service on Veterans Day November 11, 2006.

ADDITIONS AND CORRECTIONS

Every 4 years the Township designates a period of six months to submit names to add to the memorial and to submit corrections to names previously added to the Memorial. Additions and corrections have been done in 2006 during the initial renovation, 2010 and 2014. The next opportunity will be held October 2017 through March 2018, to be engraved typically no later than Veterans Day 2018. To be added to the Memorial you must meet the following two qualifications:

  1. You must have been a resident of Clear Lake Township during World War I, World War II, the Korean War, Vietnam, the Persian Gulf War, Operation Iraqi Freedom or Operation Enduring Freedom.
  2. You must submit documentation providing proof of residency within Clear Lake Township at the time of enlistment, such as a DD214.
